CHALLENGE

Portland Chamber Music Festival is the premier celebration of chamber music in the state of Maine. However, with a disjointed visual identity and poor brand visibility, the organization was struggling to gain prominence in the Portland classical music scene. PCMF came to Red Herring needing a fresh new look that would create a memorable impression across festival materials and social media, and also underscore their connection to the Portland community.

SOLUTION

After ample research to understand the festival’s mission, Portland as a city, and how the festival benefits and impacts both tourism and the local community, we developed a unique symbol for PCMF combining shape elements from sheet music, the iconic Maine fiddlehead fern, and the letter P as the cornerstone of a new visual identity accented by clean, approachable typography and engaging performance photography.

RESULT

According to Executive director Alice Kornhauser, the debut of Portland Chamber Music Festival’s new identity has had a profound impact on their visibility and continued success. “There is no doubt that Red Herring’s work has quite literally transformed our organization. We continue to get positive feedback on our new festival brochure, and the brand update has been the single most significant factor in doubling advance sales for the 2015 season.”
